Dear reader,
as you will, or in case you are a hermit, may not have experienced over the course of the last year, many aspects of everyday life can become challenges following the appearance of a tiny intruder. This holds true for school as well, and the biggest challenge is probably lying in the hands of the students. All the more so it must be emphasized that many of the children and young adults cope with the situation really well. A striking example has occurred in the 11th grade basic course English. Students from two courses were asked to pick and then report on one of the numerous immigration waves to the USA. The majority of the results were good, some excellent. A selection of some of the best ones shows that homeschooling can produce brilliant results:
- Arthika deals with Indian immigration to the USA and not only presents a comprehensive history of Indo-Americans – she does it with a wonderfully crafted layout, beautiful photos and informative graphs and charts.
- Scheimaa takes a look at the way German immigration shaped today’s USA. She presents a plethora of facts, reasons and connections that explain how deep the impact of German immigration has been.
- Finally, a mysterious author takes an unusual but very enjoyable approach and presents the first major wave of Korean immigration to the US. It’s the year 1902. We go aboard the SS Gaelic and sail to Hawaii to find out that not all that glitters is gold.

Sehr geehrte*r Besucher*in,
der durch einen kleinen Eindringling sehr veränderte Alltag stellt unsere Schüler*innen vor große Herausforderungen. Jedoch kann Lernen auch im „schulisch angeleiteten Lernen zuhause“ funktionieren und gute, oder sogar großartige Lernerfolge hervorbringen. Ein besonders einprägsames Beispiel stellt eine Projektarbeit des 11. Jahrgangs der Grundkurse Englisch dar. Die angehenden Abiturient*innen waren aufgefordert, sich mit einem selbst gewählten Migrationsprozess in die USA zu beschäftigen und dies schriftlich anhand vorgegebener Kriterien darzustellen. Die Arbeitsergebnisse waren nicht nur oft sehr gut im Sinne der Aufgabenstellung, sondern dazu auch noch interessant, durchdacht und in oft sehr gutem Englisch. Um auch Ihnen einen Eindruck zu geben, welche tollen Ergebnisse Schüler*innen im schulisch angeleiteten Lernen zuhause erreichen, präsentiere ich Ihnen hiermit drei der hervorragendsten Ergebnisse.
- Arthika beschäftigt sich mit der Einwanderung aus Indien in die USA. Der Text ist nicht nur ein gelungener Überblick über die Geschichte der indischstämmige Amerikaner*innen, er ist zudem hervorragend layoutet mit wunderbaren Fotos und erläuternde Grafiken.
- Scheimaa schaut sich an, wie deutsche Einwander*innen die USA beeinflusst haben. Mit einer Vielzahl von Fakten, Gründen, Zusammenhängen und Schlussfolgerungen kann sie erklären, wie tief die deutschen Fußspuren in der Geschichte des Landes waren.
- Schlussendlich wählt ein mysteriöser Schreiber einen ungewöhnlichen, aber sehr unterhaltsamen Weg und präsentiert die erste Welle der koreanischen Immigration. Wir gehen 1902 an Bord der SS Gaelic, fahren aus Jemulpo nach Hawaii und finden heraus, dass nicht alles Gold ist was glänzt.
